An armed attack at a restaurant in Nabinagar upazila of Brahmanbaria on Saturday night (November 1) left one person dead and two others critically injured.

The incident took place near Gani Shah Mazar in Barikandi Union when assailants opened indiscriminate fire inside the restaurant, police said.

The deceased was identified as Shipon, 38, son of Abdul Monnaf of Nurjahanpur village. The injured are Yasin, son of Shafiqul Islam of Alamnagar village, and Nur Alam, son of Rashid Mia of Charlapang village.

According to police and locals, the shooting stemmed from a long-running rivalry between Shipon’s group and a local gang led by Rifat from Thollakandi village over dominance in the area. Shipon was dining at the restaurant when Rifat and his associates reportedly opened fire, injuring three people including a restaurant employee.

Locals rescued the injured and sent them to Dhaka for advanced treatment.

Nabinagar Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Shahinur Islam said the attack was likely linked to disputes over the distribution of robbery proceeds. “Efforts are underway to arrest the accused Rifat,” he added.
