A partial collapse of a bridge under construction in northwest China on Friday left ten people dead and four missing, state media reported.

State broadcaster CCTV released video showing the central arch of the bridge suddenly collapsing and plunging into the Yellow River, while state news agency Xinhua reported that a steel cable failure was to blame.
The People's Daily newspaper said 15 workers and a project manager were on-site at the time.

Ten people have been confirmed dead, while the fate of two others is yet to be determined, CCTV reported.

The bridge on the Sichuan-Qinghai Railway is the world's largest-span double-track continuous steel truss arch bridge, according to People's Daily.

The report noted that the bridge is also China’s first railway steel truss arch bridge to span the Yellow River, the nation’s second-longest river.
State media images showed the half-built structure with its central section gone, flanked by two massive scaffolding towers and several cranes.

According to Xinhua, hundreds of rescue personnel were deployed for the search and rescue mission.

Industrial accidents remain relatively frequent in China, often linked to weak regulations and poor safety practices.

In December last year, a construction site cave-in at a major railway project in Shenzhen left 13 people missing, with no survivors reported.
