Paraguay produced a disciplined and determined display to secure a crucial 1-0 victory over Turkey in their 2026 FIFA World Cup Group D clash at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara on Saturday (June 20), keeping their hopes of reaching the knockout stage alive.

Midfielder Matías Galarza scored the decisive goal in the 64th minute, finishing a swift attacking move that punished Turkey despite their dominance in possession.

Turkey controlled large spells of the game, enjoying nearly 72 percent possession and repeatedly building attacks through Arda Güler, Kenan Yıldız and Hakan Çalhanoğlu. However, the European side failed to convert their superiority into goals, struggling with poor finishing in the final third.

Paraguay’s task became significantly harder in first-half stoppage time when experienced midfielder Miguel Almirón was shown a straight red card, forcing the South American side to play the entire second half with 10 men.

Despite the numerical disadvantage, Paraguay maintained defensive discipline and frustrated Turkey with a compact structure and quick counterattacks.

The result marks a vital recovery for Paraguay after their opening defeat to the United States, while Turkey’s second consecutive loss leaves their path to the knockout stage in serious jeopardy following their earlier defeat to Australia.

While Turkey dominated key statistical areas, Paraguay’s efficiency proved decisive as they converted their limited chances and held firm under sustained pressure to secure all three points.
