At least 11 people were killed after a military cargo aircraft crashed in Bolivia on Friday evening (February 27).

The accident took place around 6:20pm (local time) in El Alto, the country’s second-largest city.

The aircraft had taken off from Santa Cruz de la Sierra and was scheduled to land at El Alto International Airport when the incident took place, reported BBC.

Bolivia’s civil aviation authority said the plane veered off the runway during landing and crashed onto a nearby highway, striking vehicles before coming to a halt. The impact caused significant damage in the surrounding area.

Airport operations at El Alto International Airport were temporarily suspended following the crash.

Authorities have not immediately released the identities of the victims. An investigation has been launched to determine the cause of the accident.

Emergency responders were deployed to the scene, and further details are expected as the probe continues.
