12 policemen injured in gunfight with criminal gang in Raozan, one arrested
Twelve police members have been injured in an exchange of gunfire during an operation against an organised criminal gang involved in extortion and terrorist activities in Chattogram's Raozan. At that time, police arrested a man named Dildar Hossain in a bullet-hit condition from the scene.
The incident took place in the South Kadlapur Joynagar Barua Para area of Kadlapur union of Raozan Police Station late on Wednesday night, September 30. Superintendent of Police Masud Alam conveyed this information at a press conference held at the Chattogram District Superintendent of Police office on Thursday, October 1, at noon.
Police said a double-barrel gun, a single-barrel sawed-off gun, 119 rounds of Chinese rifle bullets and six rounds of lead cartridges were recovered from the scene.
Among the injured police members are SI (unarmed) Jannatun Naeem Rajan, SI Khorshed Alam, SI Bayezid Mridha, SI Md Jahangir Alam, ASI Md Juel Chandra Bishwas and ASI Rabiul Hossain, along with 12 others.
Superintendent of Police Masud Alam said a gang led by Jane Alam, also known as Dakat Alam, and Mohammad Aziz, also known as Aziz Boss, had long been demanding and collecting extortion from various individuals and institutions. Based on information in this regard, an operation was conducted in front of Jane Alam's house in South Kadlapur Joynagar Barua Para around 10:40pm on Wednesday.
He said sensing the presence of police, Jane Alam, also known as Dakat Alam (42), Mohammad Aziz, also known as Aziz Boss (52), Dildar Hossain (37), Md Rubel (27), Md Mamun-ur-Rashid, also known as Mamun (35), Md Bacha (45) and several others inside the house opened fire at police.
At that time, police also fired back in self-defence. At one stage, gunfire was exchanged between the two sides. The situation later came under control. Twelve police members were injured during the exchange of gunfire.
After the incident, Dildar Hossain was detained in a bullet-hit condition. Police said firearms and bullets were recovered from him.
Superintendent of Police Masud Alam said operations are underway to arrest others involved in the incident. At the same time, the process of taking legal action over the incident is also underway.
