The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has detained two Bangladeshi nationals for allegedly attempting to bribe security officers at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA). One of the suspects is reportedly a director of a tourism company.

According to Malaysian media outlet The Sun, both individuals, around 50 years old, were arrested during coordinated operations between 5 PM and 7 PM on Tuesday, July 15, in Negeri Sembilan and Kuala Lumpur.

The suspects are accused of facilitating illegal entry of foreigners by bribing security personnel stationed at Terminal 1 of KLIA. Authorities believe the two are part of an organized syndicate that uses an illicit process known as “counter setting” to expedite immigration clearance for foreign nationals.

On Wednesday, the Putrajaya Magistrate Court granted a six-day remand for the suspects, effective until July 20.

Datuk Saiful Azral Ariffin, Senior Director of MACC’s intelligence division, confirmed the arrests and stated the case is being investigated under Section 16(b) of the MACC Act 2009.
