20 killed in crackdown in Pakistan-administered Kashmir in one day

At least 20 people have been killed and over 50 injured in operations by security forces in Pakistan-administered Kashmir amid tensions surrounding legislative assembly elections, according to a report by Indian media outlet NDTV.

The report said Pakistani security forces opened fire on protesters in the Drik Aith area of Rawalakot. Among the deceased is claimed to be Usman Nazir, brother of Joint Protest Action Committee (JAAC) spokesperson Umar Nazir Kashmiri.

The report also claimed that local sources say 80 people have been killed by Pakistani security forces since protests began on June 5. However, these reports have not been independently verified.

In a video message circulating on social media, Kashmiri influencer Akhil Bhai claimed the situation in Rawalakot is extremely dire with numerous casualties. His statement could also not be independently verified.

Meanwhile, approximately 14,000 security personnel have been deployed in Pakistan-administered Kashmir in connection with the legislative assembly elections, the report said. Locals have alleged that in addition to heightened security measures, internet and mobile network services, as well as electricity and water supplies, have been suspended in some areas.
