The 2026 FIFA World Cup is set to break new ground not only in scale, with 48 participating teams for the first time, but also in spending power on coaching staff, underlining the growing financial intensity behind international football success.

Co-hosted by the United States, Mexico and Canada, the tournament has seen national football federations significantly increase investment in elite coaching appointments in a bid to maximise their chances on the global stage.

According to analysis-based reports, 31 of the 48 qualified teams will be led by foreign coaches, highlighting the continued globalisation of national team management.

A report by 'World Soccer Talk' places Brazil head coach Carlo Ancelotti at the top of the earnings chart, making him the highest-paid coach heading into the tournament. Appointed in May 2025 by the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF), Ancelotti’s contract has been extended through to the 2030 World Cup, earning him an annual salary of €9.5 million.

England’s Thomas Tuchel ranks second with an annual income of €5.9 million, followed by Germany’s Julian Nagelsmann on €4.9 million.

The list reflects the increasing financial competition off the pitch as much as on it, with federations investing heavily in tactical leadership to gain a marginal edge in elite competition.
