2026 World Cup sets new goal record with 173 and counting
The 2026 FIFA World Cup has set a new record for the most goals scored in a single tournament, surpassing the previous mark set in Qatar 2022.
The record was broken when Aston Trusty scored for the United States against Turkey in the third minute of their match in Inglewood, California. That goal was the 173rd of the tournament, exceeding the 172 goals scored in the entire 2022 World Cup.
The record-breaking goal was followed by four more goals in the same match, taking the total to 177 by the end of Turkey's 3-2 victory. The new record was achieved in the 59th match of the tournament. The 60th match, a goalless draw between Australia and Paraguay, did not add to the tally.
The 2022 World Cup featured 64 matches with 172 goals. This year's tournament has 104 matches, 40 more than Qatar.
Germany and the Netherlands lead the scoring charts with 10 goals each, while Canada and the United States have scored eight. Five teams — Switzerland, Brazil, Japan, Sweden and Norway — have scored seven goals each.
FIFA President Gianni Infantino celebrated the goal fest on Instagram, writing: "Surpassing the previous record of 172 goals from Qatar showcases the excitement and attacking power that makes the 2026 World Cup unforgettable."
