21 killed in bus-truck collision in Brazil

At least 21 people were killed and four others injured after a passenger bus collided head-on with a truck in Brazil’s southern state of Parana.

The crash took place on the BR-372 highway in Parana on Wednesday (August 19).

Via Araucaria, the company responsible for operating the road, confirmed the casualties in a post on X.

All those killed were passengers on the bus, according to authorities.

Several victims died at the scene, while the four injured were rescued and taken to hospital for treatment.

Local media reported that the bus was operated under the health department of the municipality of Imbituva. Authorities in Imbituva, however, did not immediately provide details about the purpose of the journey or the identities of those travelling on the bus.

Imbituva has a population of around 30,000 and is located about 180 kilometres west of Parana’s capital, Curitiba.

The crash disrupted traffic along the affected section of the highway. The cause of the collision was not immediately known, and authorities have launched an investigation to determine how the bus and truck collided.
