25 killed, 60 injured in LPG tanker explosion in Mexico

At least 25 people were killed and 60 others injured after a tanker truck carrying liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) exploded in Mexico City’s Iztapalapa district, reports Reuters on Friday (September 19).

According to Mexico’s Health Ministry, the blast occurred on Thursday after the tanker, carrying approximately 50,000 liters of LPG, struck a boundary wall on a road in the densely populated area, triggering a massive explosion and fire.

Ten people died at the scene, while 15 others succumbed to their injuries in hospital. At least 30 nearby vehicles were burned in the fire, officials said.

Twenty-one people remain hospitalised, some in critical condition, while 38 have been discharged following treatment.

Local authorities stated that Preliminary investigations suggest excessive speed and driver error were the likely causes of the accident.
