A Russian military transport aircraft crashed over occupied Crimea on Tuesday evening, killing all 29 people on board, the Russian Defense Ministry confirmed Wednesday (April 1).

According to the ministry and Russian news agency TASS, the An-26 aircraft lost contact with the control tower around 6:00pm (local time) during a routine flight.

Search teams later located the wreckage in a remote, mountainous area, confirming the deaths of six crew members and 23 passengers.

Preliminary investigations suggest a technical failure as the likely cause.

However, no evidence of missile strikes, drone attacks, or bird collisions, officials reported.

Crimea has been under Russian control since 2014, following its annexation from Ukraine.
