Bangladesh has imported 3,220 metric tons of coarse rice (non-basmati) from India via 23 shipments at Benapole Port over the past 11 days.

The consignments entered the port’s No. 31 transshipment yard, officials said.

On Thursday (February 26) at 9:00pm, nine trucks carrying rice from India’s Petrapole Port arrived at Benapole, bringing the total import over the period to 3,220 metric tons.

The rice was imported by Haji Musa Karim & Sons, while customs clearance and distribution are being handled by the C&F agent Messrs Bhuiya Enterprise.

Port Director Shamim Hossain said authorities have instructed officials to expedite clearance of the shipments to ensure timely delivery to the market.

Abdus Samad, owner of Haji Musa Karim & Sons, said the rice was imported at a cost of Tk 50 per kg, and it will be sold in the local market at Tk 51 per kg.

The government recently authorised 232 importers to bring in 200,000 metric tons of rice by March 3, which must be distributed in the domestic market within the set deadline.
