Voting in Sylhet’s six parliamentary constituencies reached 35 percent after six and a half hours of polling, the Returning Officer and Sylhet Deputy Commissioner Md Sarwar Alam said on Thursday (February 12).

However, no major incidents or complaints were reported by midday, he added.

Polling began at 7:30am, but voter turnout was low in most urban centres, with only 3–4 of the city’s 20 polling stations showing significant activity. Areas with tea workers and minority populations recorded relatively higher participation.

At Nobin Chandra Government Primary School, 887 of 3,270 registered voters had cast ballots by 1:30pm, according to Presiding Officer Tofail Ahmed Chowdhury.

At MC College women’s centre, 959 of 3,562 voters had voted, said Presiding Officer Md Saifuddin.

At Khasdweepir Government Primary School, 700 of 3,871 voters had cast ballots at the women’s centre, while 900 of 3,900 voted at the men’s centre, officials reported.

Significant vote cast was also observed at Sylhet Government High School in Lakkatura tea estate, where 1,245 of 2,834 registered voters had voted by 12:30pm, according to Presiding Officer SM Kamrul Hasan.

The election in Sylhet has so far proceeded smoothly, with authorities monitoring polling centres closely.
