3-member council to run interim state affairs in Iran
The Iranian government has confirmed the death of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in US-Israeli strikes. State media broadcast the news on Sunday morning.
Following Khamenei's death, a three-member council has been formed to conduct the country's interim state affairs.
According to state television and media reports, the council comprises President Masoud Pezeshkian, judiciary chief Gholam Hossein Mohseni Ejei and a jurist from the Guardian Council.
Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was the second person to hold the position of supreme religious leader in Iran since the 1979 Islamic Revolution. An assembly of religious leaders called the Assembly of Leadership Experts will elect Khamenei's successor. According to the country's constitution, they must do so swiftly.
However, due to continuing US and Israeli strikes, convening the assembly meeting quickly may be difficult for security reasons.
