4 including NYPD officer Didarul Islam killed Manhattan shooting
A tragic shooting in Midtown Manhattan on Monday evening claimed the lives of four individuals, including NYPD Officer Didarul Islam, a Bangladeshi immigrant and father of two. The suspected gunman, identified as 27-year-old Shane Tamura of Las Vegas, died by suicide following the attack.
The incident occurred at approximately 6:30 p.m. inside 345 Park Avenue, a high-rise office building that houses major tenants including Blackstone and the NFL. Tamura, armed with an M4-style assault rifle equipped with a silencer and scope, entered the building and opened fire in the lobby, fatally shooting Officer Islam, who was working a private security detail while off-duty but in uniform2.
Officer Islam, 36, had served with the NYPD for three and a half years and was assigned to the 47th Precinct. He is survived by his wife, who is eight months pregnant, and their two young sons2.
“He made the ultimate sacrifice,” said NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch. “Shot in cold blood, wearing a uniform that stood for the promise he made to this city. He died as he lived — a hero”.
Mayor Eric Adams praised Islam’s dedication, calling him “a person of faith” and “a true blue New Yorker.” Adams added, “He loved this city and lived out the life of a godly person”3.
Community tributes have poured in, including from Queens Shomrim, a volunteer safety organization, which expressed solidarity with Islam’s family and the NYPD. EMS First also honored him, stating, “Tonight, a hero made the ultimate, selfless sacrifice in the line of duty”.
Authorities are continuing to investigate Tamura’s motive. He reportedly traveled cross-country from Las Vegas and had a documented history of mental health issues5.
The NYPD and city officials have vowed to honor Officer Islam’s legacy and ensure his sacrifice is never forgotten.
