Five American soldiers were injured after an Army sergeant opened fire at Fort Stewart, a large military base in Georgia, officials confirmed.

The shooter, identified as Sergeant Quornelius Radford, allegedly used his personal handgun to target fellow troops before being tackled and subdued by other soldiers on site.

The incident took place at Fort Stewart, located about 240 miles southeast of Atlanta. The base went into immediate lockdown following the shooting, which occurred at approximately 10:56 a.m. EST.

Brigadier General John Lubas, commanding general of the 3rd Infantry Division, said all five injured soldiers are currently receiving medical treatment and are in stable condition. Three of those wounded have already undergone surgery.

Gen. Lubas confirmed that Sgt. Radford is an active-duty soldier assigned to the 2nd Brigade Combat Team. The sergeant had not been deployed to a combat zone prior to the incident.

“The quick action of brave soldiers who immediately and without hesitation tackled the suspect prevented further harm,” Gen. Lubas told reporters. Law enforcement took Sgt. Radford into custody at 11:35 a.m. EST, roughly 39 minutes after the shooting began.

Sgt. Radford is currently in pre-trial confinement and is cooperating with Army criminal investigators. His motive remains unknown. Gen. Lubas also disclosed that Radford had a prior arrest for driving under the influence—a fact that was not previously known to military authorities.

The handgun used was not issued by the military, and officials are investigating how it was brought onto the base.

Video circulating on social media showed military personnel evacuating the area as the lockdown unfolded. A Burger King manager at the base described hiding with staff in a safe room during the lockdown, monitoring social media updates while waiting for the all-clear.

Outside the restaurant, customers formed a line at the door, and some sheltered in their cars during the tense situation.

President Donald Trump, speaking at an unrelated White House event, pledged full prosecution of the attacker. “The perpetrator of this atrocity—and that’s exactly what it is—will be prosecuted to the full extent of the law,” he said.

Georgia Governor Brian Kemp called for prayers for the victims and their families. “We ask that Georgians everywhere keep those affected in their hearts and prayers,” he said.

Fort Stewart, spanning nearly 280,000 acres, is the largest U.S. Army base east of the Mississippi River and home to nearly 10,000 people. It is located in Hinesville, a coastal city about 40 miles southwest of Savannah.
