53 Awami League, affiliate activists arrested in Dhaka: DMP
Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) have arrested 53 activists of the Awami League and its affiliated organisations from the Bashundhara Residential Area in the capital’s Vatara.
According to the DMP, police raided a building in the area on Thursday night (August 13) after receiving information that a group had gathered there to organise a preparatory meeting and a flash procession ahead of August 15.
The police said those gathered were carrying banners and placards and chanting what it described as “anti-state” slogans. A team from Vatara Police Station subsequently conducted an operation and arrested 53 people.
In a statement, the DMP said legal proceedings against the detainees were underway. It added that surveillance and special operations would continue across the capital to maintain law and order.
