53 citizens urge Consensus Commission to uphold unity
The recommendations for implementing the July National Charter, prepared by the National Consensus Commission, have been handed over to the Chief Adviser.
Although the charter is seen as vital for the country’s future political stability, 53 citizens have expressed concern over the emergence of new divisions regarding its implementation.
In a joint statement on Saturday, November 1, they said that the activities of the National Consensus Commission should continue giving priority to national unity, until all political parties, civil society, and relevant stakeholders reach an understanding.
The citizens said that constitutional amendments are grave matters that should not be rushed. They suggested that the current 270-day (nine-month) timeframe be extended to two years to make the process more effective. They added that other countries allow extensive discussions before amending their constitutions, and Bangladesh could do the same.
They also stated that withdrawing the note of dissent would go against the spirit of unity. Bringing constitutional amendments without resolving the objections of various political parties could lead to long-term division and new political crises.
The citizens further added that including writers, thinkers, activists, and representatives of civil society in the commission’s discussions would reduce division and enrich dialogue.
The statement noted that the future of a Bangladesh freed from autocracy through the July uprising depends on maintaining national unity. To preserve that unity, the Consensus Commission must be given the highest priority.
The statement was endorsed by poet Kajol Shahnewaz, political analyst Zahed Ur Rahman, Professor R Razi, historian Golam Sarwar, meteorologist Mostafa Kamal Polash, novelist Gazi Tanzia, human rights activist Rezaur Rahman Lenin, musician Amal Akash, writer Rakhal Raha, journalist Ariful Islam Sabbir, poet Fuad Saki, activist Shamim Reza, and a total of 53 citizens.
