540 kg excess goods found in shipment, fined over Tk 19 lakh

The Customs Intelligence and Investigation Directorate has collected a total of Tk 19,13,440.57 from an importer after discovering over 540 kg of excess goods in a shipment at Chattogram Port compared to the declared quantity. The amount includes additional duties, taxes, penalties and redemption fines.

In a press release on Wednesday, the directorate said that based on a tip-off, officials of the Chattogram regional office conducted a physical examination of a shipment imported by Rainbow Corporation. During the inspection of the consignment brought under a bill of entry dated July 5, a significant discrepancy was found between the declared and actual weight of the goods.

The examination revealed that while 6,704 kg 560 grams of chocolate was declared, the actual weight was found to be 7,132 kg 250 grams. Similarly, 2,572 kg 160 grams of wafer was declared, but the actual weight was 2,684 kg 880 grams.

In total, 540 kg 410 grams of excess goods were found, which is approximately 5.83 percent more than the declared net weight.

In this case, additional duties and taxes of Tk 8,13,440.57 were collected, along with a penalty of Tk 10,00,000 and a redemption fine of Tk 1,00,000. Thus, a total of Tk 19,13,440.57 in additional revenue was deposited into the state treasury.
