55 killed in massive explosion near China border in Myanmar
At least 55 people were killed and dozens more injured in a massive explosion in northern Myanmar near the Chinese border, according to local media reports and international news outlets.
The blast took place around noon (local time) on Sunday (May 31) in Kaung Tat village, located in Namkham Township of Shan State, a region controlled by the armed rebel group Ta’ang National Liberation Army (TNLA).
The TNLA said preliminary findings suggest the explosion was caused by mining explosives that had been stored in the area and detonated accidentally.
However, the exact cause of the blast has yet to be determined.
While the group confirmed casualties in an official statement, it did not provide a specific death toll. Reports by the BBC and local media said the victims included 25 women and 30 men.
In a statement posted on Telegram, the TNLA’s political wing, the Palaung State Liberation Front, expressed deep condolences to the families of those killed, injured and affected by the tragedy.
The organisation said an investigation is underway to determine the cause of the explosion and identify any negligence or misconduct. It pledged to hold those responsible accountable if wrongdoing is found.
The group also promised emergency relief, medical assistance and rehabilitation support for affected families as quickly as possible.
Several local residents said on social media that the blast was so powerful many initially believed it was an airstrike.
Authorities and local officials continue to investigate the incident as efforts remain underway to determine the full extent of the damage and casualties.
