56 killed in 60 hours of continuous rain in India's Uttar Pradesh

At least 56 people have been killed and 46 others injured in 60 hours of continuous heavy rainfall in India's Uttar Pradesh. According to data provided by the state government, 107 livestock died and 1,021 houses were damaged in the disaster.

Deaths have occurred in multiple districts of the state. Among them, the highest seven died in Sitapur, five each in Lakhimpur Kheri, Bahraich and Balrampur, and four each in Ayodhya and Gorakhpur. The highest number of livestock deaths (28) and house damage (272) occurred in Hardoi district. According to meteorological office data, rainfall 200 times above normal was recorded in Farrukhabad, 160 times in Kanpur city, and 130 times more in Kannauj, Kanpur Dehat and Hardoi. More than 220 millimetres of rainfall was recorded in Banda and Fatehgarh.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said the situation arose as a low-pressure system formed over Madhya Pradesh and adjoining Chhattisgarh advanced towards Uttar Pradesh. There is a risk of flash floods in some basins of the state's central and Terai regions. Overnight rain and gusty winds have flooded low-lying areas, disrupting public life.

Opposition parties have sharply criticised the Uttar Pradesh government over the continuous rain and waterlogging. Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav shared a video of waterlogging on the Ganga Expressway and wrote on X that a river of BJP's corruption is flowing on the Ganga Expressway. He said it is a wonderful opportunity for those who change names, suggesting a new name: Ganga Express Waterway. He described it as highly reprehensible.

On the other hand, BSP chief Mayawati has called on the government to stand by the people affected by excessive rain and natural disasters and to ensure all kinds of assistance.
