A strong 5.8 magnitude earthquake struck the Marmaris coast of Turkey’s southwestern Mugla province on Tuesday. A 14-year-old girl died in the incident, and at least 69 people were injured.

Turkey’s Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) and the state-run Anadolu Agency confirmed the matter.

Mugla Governor Idris Akbiyik said, "The girl fell ill out of fear during the quake. Although she was rushed to the hospital, doctors could not save her."

The epicenter of the earthquake was located about 10 kilometers off the Marmaris coast and around 67 kilometers deep in the Mediterranean Sea. While there were no major reports of physical damage, many people got hurt while rushing out of buildings in panic.

Governor Akbiyik also mentioned that 55 of the injured were admitted to hospitals, while the others were released after receiving first aid. Among the injured, 46 received emergency treatment.

It is worth noting that in February 2023, a devastating 7.8 magnitude earthquake in Turkey killed more than 53,000 people across 11 provinces.
