At least six people, including the gunman, were killed in a mass shooting at a busy food market in Bangkok on Monday, according to local authorities.

The incident occurred at the Or Tor Kor Market, a popular fresh produce hub located near the well-known Chatuchak Market, a major tourist destination in the Thai capital. The shooting sent shockwaves through the city and prompted an immediate police response.

According to the Erawan Emergency Medical Centre, which monitors hospital emergencies in Bangkok, the victims include four security guards employed at the market, a female civilian, and the suspected gunman, who reportedly took his own life at the scene.

"Police are investigating the motive. So far, it's being treated as a mass shooting," said Worapat Sukthai, deputy police chief of Bangkok’s Bang Sue district, speaking to AFP. Authorities are also examining whether there is any connection between the attack and ongoing border tensions between Thailand and Cambodia.

The shooting unfolded in broad daylight, adding to growing concerns over gun violence in Thailand. In recent years, the country has witnessed a series of high-profile shootings that have reignited debates around firearm regulations and public safety.

This tragedy follows another fatal shooting in May 2025, when a 33-year-old man opened fire in Ban Don Subdistrict, U Thong District, killing two women and a man. That attack occurred just 50 meters from Wat Yang Sawang Arom School, prompting a swift evacuation of students.

Police say the investigation into Monday’s incident is ongoing, and further details will be released as they become available.
