At least 61 Israeli soldiers have died by suicide since the start of Israel’s military operations in Gaza on October 7, 2023, according to reports from Haaretz and Middle East Monitor.

The most recent case involved a soldier stationed at a northern Israeli military base, who shot himself while on active duty. He was critically injured and later pronounced dead at a hospital.

The military has opened an official investigation into the incident.

A Knesset Research and Information Center report, released on October 28, 2025, revealed that from early 2024 to July 2025, at least 279 Israeli soldiers attempted suicide, with roughly one death for every seven attempts.

Experts link the surge in suicides to prolonged combat, extreme operational pressure, and psychological exhaustion, highlighting a deepening mental health crisis within the Israeli military.

The figures expose a hidden toll of the Gaza war, showing that the conflict’s impact extends far beyond the battlefield, straining the mental well-being of soldiers on the front lines.
