6.1 magnitude earthquake shakes Philippines
A 6.1 magnitude earthquake jolted the coastal region of southern Philippines on Saturday, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS).
The epicenter of the quake was located near the province of Davao Occidental, at a depth of about 101 kilometers (63 miles) beneath the surface and around 70 kilometers from the mainland. No casualties or damage have been reported so far.
Marlawin Fuentes, a government rescue worker on Sarangani Island, said that while the earthquake wasn’t very strong, office tables and computers shook for nearly five seconds.
No tsunami warning has been issued in connection with the quake.
It is worth mentioning that the Philippines lies in the Pacific "Ring of Fire," a region prone to frequent earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.
