62 injured in clash over local dominance in Jhenaidah

At least 62 people were injured in a clash between two rival groups over local dominance in Shailkupa upazila of Jhenaidah on Thursday morning.

The violence broke out around 8:30am in Bishnupur village, where tensions had reportedly been simmering for a long time between two social groups led by Matiur Rahman and Kafil Uddin Member.

According to local residents, supporters of the two factions engaged in a fierce confrontation using locally made weapons following a dispute over social influence in the area.

During the clash, at least 15 houses were allegedly attacked and vandalised.

Of the injured, 45 received treatment at the Upazila Health Complex, while at least 17 others were admitted to Jhenaidah Sadar Hospital, according to the latest reports.

Officer-in-Charge of Shailkupa Police Station, Humayun Kabir Molla, confirmed the incident, saying the clash stemmed from a social dispute.

“Police have been deployed to the area following the incident,” he said.
