A strong 6.0-magnitude earthquake struck Pakistan’s north-western regions of Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan on Monday, January 19, leaving at least one person dead and several houses collapsed, Reuters reported.

According to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), the earthquake originated at a depth of around 35 kilometres. Reuters said the strong tremors triggered landslides in hilly areas, spreading panic among residents.

Regional information minister Ghulam Abbas said many mud-built houses in different parts of Gilgit-Baltistan either collapsed or were severely damaged. After the quake, large rocks rolled down from hills, blocking several key connecting roads and a major highway.

Administrative sources said one person was killed after being struck by a falling rock while travelling on a road. Following the incident, government agencies launched rescue operations with heavy machinery to clear blocked roads and restore traffic movement.

Rescue teams have been deployed to affected areas, and local authorities are assessing the full extent of the damage. Rescue efforts are facing difficulties due to disrupted communication in remote and mountainous regions.

The government said earthquakes are frequently felt in the region, but due to the strength and duration of this tremor, further damage cannot be ruled out. Authorities have been instructed to arrange emergency assistance and safe shelter for affected people.
