At least seven people were killed and 22 others injured after a sleeper bus caught fire following a head-on collision with a trailer truck on the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway in India's western state of Rajasthan.

The accident took place around 2:30am on Tuesday (June 30) in the Dausa district, when the bus, travelling from Rishikesh in Uttarakhand to Indore in Madhya Pradesh, collided with an oncoming trailer.

The impact triggered a massive fire that engulfed both vehicles.

According to police, most of the passengers were asleep when the crash occurred, leaving many trapped inside the burning bus. Firefighters rushed to the scene, extinguished the blaze and launched a rescue operation.

Officials said five victims died from severe burns, while two others succumbed to head injuries sustained in the collision.

The injured—most of them women and children—were rescued and taken to Dausa District Hospital, where several remain in critical condition.

Authorities have yet to determine the exact cause of the crash.

However, preliminary findings suggest the bus driver may have fallen asleep at the wheel, while speeding is also being investigated as a possible contributing factor.

Police said efforts are underway to establish the cause of the accident, identify all the victims and assist the injured.
