7 killed, including child, as hospital wall collapses in Bengaluru
At least seven people, including a child, were killed after a section of a hospital compound wall collapsed in Bengaluru amid heavy rainfall on Wednesday (April 30).
According to a statement from D. K. Shivakumar, deputy chief minister of Karnataka, the victims include one child and four street vendors. Two of the deceased were residents of the neighbouring state of Kerala, while the identity of one victim has yet to be confirmed.
Calling the incident “extremely unfortunate,” Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief in a post on X (formerly Twitter).
Three others injured in the collapse were rescued and are currently receiving treatment at a local hospital, officials said.
The incident occurred as the city experienced a sudden spell of severe weather following weeks of intense heat. Heavy rain, strong winds, and hailstorms lashed Bengaluru on Wednesday, providing temporary relief from the heatwave but also triggering widespread disruptions.
Several parts of the city reported waterlogging and fallen trees, leading to traffic disruptions. Authorities said the hospital’s boundary wall likely gave way under the impact of the adverse weather conditions, resulting in the fatalities.
