8 injured in BNP-Jamaat clash in Bagerhat
At least eight people were injured in a clash between BNP and Jamaat leaders and activists in Baruipara area of Bagerhat Sadar Upazila.
The incident took place around 10:30 pm on Wednesday, but the situation is currently normal, the police said.
Jamaat claims that the leaders and activists of the paddy sheaf symbol had gone out to distribute money among voters. When local Jamaat activists went there after receiving this information, they were attacked. At least six Jamaat activists were injured in this clash.
On the other hand, BNP alleges that 8-10 Jamaat workers were going door to door distributing money and leaflets. When BNP workers stopped them, a clash broke out during the altercation. Two BNP workers were injured in this incident.
Among the injured are Jamaat's Tuhin Sheikh, Habibur Rahman Sheikh, Golam Mostafa, Shimul Sheikh, Md. Hasibul and Ali Mallick and BNP's Bhaskar Chakraborty and Selim Sheikh. Six Jamaat workers have been admitted to the Fakirhat Upazila Health Complex, said Advocate Mostain Billah, the chief election agent of Sheikh Manjurul Haque Rahad, the candidate with the scale symbol in Bagerhat-2 constituency.
He alleged that some BNP leaders and activists were distributing money on behalf of paddy sheaf. When Jamaat workers went there on information, they were attacked with sharp weapons, which triggered the clash.
However, Baruipara Union BNP President Sheikh Golam Masud said that Jamaat people were distributing money and leaflets. When they were stopped, a clash broke out and two of their workers suffered head injuries. They were given first aid.
Bagerhat Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Masum Khan said that after receiving information about the clash, the police quickly reached the spot and brought the situation under control. Currently, there is a calm atmosphere in the area.
