83 children killed in Lebanon in one week: UN
UNICEF, the United Nations children's agency, has reported that at least 83 children have been killed and 254 injured in Lebanon since March 2. The number of child casualties has been rising alarmingly since the war between Israel and Hezbollah began in Lebanon.
The information was revealed in a statement published on UNICEF's website on Monday, March 9.
The statement said that over the past week, an average of more than 10 children have been killed daily across Lebanon, and approximately 36 children have been injured each day.
UNICEF further informed that at least 329 children have been killed and 1,632 injured in Lebanon over the past 28 months, based on documented incidents.
The agency stated that these statistics are extremely horrifying and provide clear evidence of the severe impact of the ongoing conflict on children.
The statement noted that widespread displacement across Lebanon has forced nearly 700,000 people, including 200,000 children, to flee their homes and seek shelter elsewhere. This has further increased the numbers of thousands already displaced in previous conflicts.
UNICEF has called upon all parties involved in the conflict to protect civilians, schools and shelters. It has also urged them to fulfil their obligations under international humanitarian law.
At the conclusion of the statement, the agency called for swift de-escalation of the situation and immediate effective measures to protect children from further harm.
