86 injured as Iran launches missile barrage on Israel
At least 86 Israeli civilians were injured Sunday after Iran launched a barrage of ballistic missiles into Israel, in apparent retaliation for a U.S. airstrike a day earlier that reportedly destroyed three Iranian nuclear facilities.
According to the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), 27 missiles were fired in two waves, striking 10 locations across the country early Sunday morning, The Times of Israel reported.
Among the injured were two children receiving treatment at Ichilov Medical Center in Tel Aviv, and a man in his 30s who sustained moderate shrapnel injuries. Four individuals are in critical condition, two are listed as moderate, three remain under evaluation, and 77 have suffered light injuries, according to Israel’s Health Ministry.
The initial salvo included 22 missiles, followed by a second wave of five, the IDF stated.
Emergency medical teams were dispatched to impact sites in northern and central Israel shortly before 8 a.m. local time. Air raid sirens were triggered in various regions, urging residents to seek shelter. The shelter-in-place orders were lifted around 8:20 a.m., according to local reports.
In Haifa, a coastal city in northern Israel, a ballistic missile struck without warning sirens sounding beforehand, The Times of Israel noted. Explosions were also seen and heard over Jerusalem, with multiple projectiles visible in the hazy morning sky, CNN reported.
Footage circulated on social media showed the white contrails of several missiles streaking across the sky. Warning sirens were also activated in neighboring Jordan, reports said.
“Following the alarms that were heard in the last few minutes, MDA teams went out to search the scenes where reports were received,” emergency response agency Magen David Adom said in a statement.
Iran’s armed forces said Sunday they targeted multiple sites in Israel, including Ben Gurion Airport, in response to recent U.S. strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities.
According to a statement reported by Fars news agency, the operation—dubbed “Honest Promise 3”—used a mix of long-range liquid and solid-fuel missiles with powerful warheads.
Targets included the airport, a biological research center, logistics bases, and several command and control centers.
Iran’s Revolutionary Guard said it launched 40 missiles, including the Khorramshahr-4, which reportedly can carry multiple warheads.
