9 injured in BNP-Jamaat clashes in Meherpur

At least nine people have been injured in separate clashes between BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami supporters in Meherpur Sadar and Gangni upazilas on election day. The incidents occurred on Thursday morning in the Chandpur Government Primary School centre area in Sadar upazila and the Bhatpara area in Gangni upazila.

The clash in Bhatpara Government Primary School centre in Gangni upazila originated around 10:00 am over obstructing voters' entry into the polling centre.

Witnesses said the situation remained calm until morning but tension spread as the day progressed. At one stage, an argument between the two sides escalated into a clash. The injured were treated at local clinics.

Police and BGB members rushed to the spot upon receiving information and brought the situation under control.

Gangni Thana OC Uttam Kumar Das said the situation is currently normal and voting is ongoing. Action will be taken upon receiving complaints after investigation.

Meanwhile, three people were injured in a clash between BNP and Jamaat activists and supporters in the Chandpur Government Primary School centre area in Sadar upazila. They are receiving treatment at local hospitals.

Law enforcement agencies detained Shahabuddin, suspected to be involved in the incident. Police said he is known as a BNP activist.

Following the incident, District Returning Officer and Deputy Commissioner Syed Enamul Kabir visited the centre.
