92 years of wait ends as Egypt secure first-ever World Cup win
Egypt have finally ended their 92-year wait for a World Cup victory, beating New Zealand 3-1 in their Group G match at BC Place Stadium in Vancouver on Monday, June 22. Goals from Mohamed Salah, Mohamed Ziko and Trezeguet secured the historic win for the African side.
New Zealand took the lead in the 15th minute through Finn Surman, who headed home from a Michael Payne corner. The Kiwis went into the break with a 1-0 lead.
Egypt turned the match around in the second half. Mohamed Ziko equalised in the 58th minute with a header from Mohamed Hany's cross. Just nine minutes later, Mohamed Salah put Egypt ahead with a clinical finish from inside the box after a one-two with Ziko.
Trezeguet, who came on as a substitute, sealed the victory in the 82nd minute with a header from a cross on the right side, scoring with just his third touch of the ball.
Egypt had drawn 1-1 with Belgium in their first match, while New Zealand had drawn 2-2 with Iran. This victory puts Egypt in a strong position in Group G.
