995 aftershocks recorded after Venezuela earthquake, death toll rises to 3,342
The death toll from the powerful twin earthquakes that struck northern Venezuela has risen to 3,342, with 16,740 injured. A total of 995 aftershocks have been recorded since the quakes, according to the country's Ministry of Communication and Information.
Citing the ministry, Anadolu Agency reported that 6,462 people have been rescued from the rubble so far. The earthquakes damaged 856 buildings, of which 190 completely collapsed.
Authorities said 86,794 families have been provided with assistance, while 17,345 people remain homeless. Some 4,088 rescue workers are operating in the affected areas, along with 29,567 personnel and 27,482 volunteers from Caracas participating in relief efforts.
So far, 9,585 metric tonnes of food and approximately 669,000 litres of water have been distributed in the affected areas. A total of 23,820 patients have been brought under medical care, and 79 temporary camps have been set up for the homeless.
The US Geological Survey (USGS) reported that two powerful earthquakes of magnitudes 7.2 and 7.5 struck the South American country on June 24, just 39 seconds apart.
