A 30-second workout may pack a powerful biological punch
Just 30 seconds of all-out exercise may trigger far more extensive biological changes in the body than longer periods of moderate exercise, according to a new study by US researchers.
Published in Cell Reports Medicine, the study found that a 30-second burst of maximal cycling followed by four minutes of rest altered levels of 714 health-related proteins in participants’ blood. By comparison, moderate-intensity cycling produced significant changes in only seven proteins, highlighting the potential impact of exercise intensity on the body’s biological response.
Researchers also identified a link between intense exercise and a molecule called Lac-Phe, which has been associated with appetite regulation and fat metabolism. Levels of Lac-Phe increased following intense exercise, while changes were also observed in the activity of more than 1,600 genes in fat cells. The findings suggest that intense exercise may influence how the body processes and stores fat.
In another part of the study, researchers analysed health data from more than 53,000 people. They found that some of the proteins activated by intense exercise were associated with lower risks of cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes and obesity. Some were also linked to markers associated with slower biological ageing.
Dr Paul Cohen, the study’s lead researcher, said one of the key findings was that even a brief burst of intense exercise could trigger a significant response throughout the body. The findings could be particularly relevant for people who struggle to find time for longer workouts, he said.
However, the researchers cautioned against interpreting the findings as a reason to abandon longer or regular exercise in favour of short, high-intensity workouts.
Experts say exercise intensity and type should be tailored to an individual’s age, fitness level and overall health. People with existing health conditions should consult a doctor or qualified fitness professional before beginning high-intensity exercise.
The study therefore points to the potential benefits of brief bursts of intense physical activity, but does not establish them as a replacement for regular exercise and sustained physical activity.
