AAP leader shot dead in Punjab
A leader of India’s Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), Gurpreet Singh Gopi, was shot dead by armed assailants in Mamdot town of Punjab on Sunday (August 30).
Gopi and another man, identified as Harpreet, were travelling on a motorcycle when attackers in a car allegedly chased them and opened fire. Gopi was killed at the scene, according to police.
The attackers also fired at another vehicle carrying Gopi’s supporters and friends, investigators said.
Police suspect an old rivalry and a dispute linked to local elections may have been behind the attack.
Senior Superintendent of Police Bhupinder Singh Sidhu said the two sides had a longstanding dispute. Police have identified the suspected attackers and formed several teams to track them down, he said.
Sidhu added that the prime suspect has a criminal record.
The killing, reportedly linked to election-related violence at the local level, has renewed concerns over law and order in Punjab and triggered fresh political discussion in the state.
