Abhishek Banerjee wears helmet after attack
Trinamool Congress National General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee was allegedly attacked by protesters while visiting the family of a party worker killed in post-election violence in West Bengal on Saturday.
According to Indian media reports, Banerjee came under attack as he was heading to the residence of slain Trinamool worker Sanju Karmakar in Sonarpur, South 24 Parganas. Protesters allegedly punched and assaulted him, damaged the motorcycle carrying him, and threw eggs and shoes. His shirt was also reportedly torn during the incident.
Following the attack, Banerjee wore a cricket helmet for protection before continuing his visit to the victim's family.
Reports said groups of protesters, including women carrying eggs and others holding black flags, had gathered along the route shouting "Go Back" slogans. To avoid roadblocks, Banerjee reportedly left his vehicle and rode on the back of a party worker's motorcycle before being confronted by demonstrators.
Speaking after reaching the victim's home, Banerjee accused the BJP-led state administration of failing to ensure security.
"My head was saved because I was wearing a helmet. They broke my glasses," he said. "If they can attack me, they may also target the elderly parents of Sanju Karmakar."
He added that he had informed local police and administrative authorities about his visit in advance but claimed no adequate security arrangements had been made.
Banerjee also criticized Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari and the BJP government, alleging political intimidation and administrative failure.
Saturday marked Banerjee's first major political programme since the West Bengal Assembly election results were announced three weeks ago. His itinerary included visits to families of Trinamool workers allegedly affected by post-election violence in Beliaghata and Sonarpur.
After the Sonarpur incident, Banerjee was taken to a hospital for treatment. Later in the evening, he was seen leaving the emergency department in a wheelchair alongside Trinamool chief Mamata Banerjee, who said he was being transferred to another hospital for further care.
