AI brings 1980s back in a new retro-photo trend
The 1980s are making a comeback on social media — this time through artificial intelligence.
Users are turning ordinary modern photographs into convincing retro portraits with AI image-generation tools, recreating the fashion, hairstyles, lighting and analogue texture associated with the decade.
The trend has spread across Instagram, with users also sharing the prompts they use to achieve the look.
Rather than simply applying a vintage filter, AI can transform the entire visual setting. Images can be redesigned with period clothing, voluminous hairstyles, statement jewellery, warm colour tones, studio-flash lighting and subtle 35mm film grain.
For a more convincing result, users are advised to start with a clear, well-lit photograph and specify that facial features, identity, age and natural expression should remain unchanged. Details such as clothing, hairstyle, makeup, background and lighting can then be tailored to a particular 1980s aesthetic.
The more specific the prompt, the more distinctive the result. Users can recreate anything from an old family-album portrait or vintage photography studio to a disco setting or a period street scene. For a distinctly Bangladeshi feel, prompts can include old Dhaka streets, period furniture, vintage telephones, local clothing and the look of photography studios from the era.
Hair, clothing and lighting are particularly important in making the images believable. But using too many retro elements at once can make a portrait look artificial, so a single, clearly defined style often produces a more natural result.
