Ajax secure Barcelona goalkeeper Ter Stegen on loan

Dutch giants AFC Ajax have completed the season-long loan signing of veteran goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen from FC Barcelona for the 2026-27 campaign.

Ajax confirmed the move in a statement on Tuesday, saying an agreement had been reached with both Barcelona and the German international, who will spend the entire season in Amsterdam.

The 34-year-old joined Barcelona in 2014 and established himself as one of Europe's leading goalkeepers. However, a series of serious injuries over the past two seasons limited his appearances and disrupted his place in the squad.

With Joan García emerging as Barcelona's first-choice goalkeeper, the Catalan club opted to loan Ter Stegen out in search of regular first-team football.

Ter Stegen had previously spent the second half of last season on loan at Girona FC, but his spell was cut short after suffering a hamstring injury in just his second appearance, ruling him out for the remainder of the campaign.

The injury setbacks also affected his international career, with the German goalkeeper missing out on a place in Germany national football team's final squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

During his 12-year spell at Barcelona, Ter Stegen won one UEFA Champions League title and seven La Liga crowns. He remains under contract with the Spanish champions until June 2028.
