Ajinkya Rahane retires from all forms of cricket

Indian batter Ajinkya Rahane has announced his retirement from all forms of cricket, ending a career defined by resilience, composure and one of India's greatest overseas Test triumphs.

The 38-year-old made the announcement in a video message posted on social media on Thursday (July 30), confirming that he is stepping away from both international and domestic cricket with immediate effect.

"Every beginning has an end, and every journey reaches its destination. When that moment arrives, it should be embraced with respect. I have always believed in timing, and today feels like the right time to retire from international cricket and all formats of the game," Rahane said.

Alongside the video, he wrote: "Cap No. 278 signing off. Thank you for all the love and support over the years. Forever grateful."

Rahane made his India debut in T20Is in 2011, but established himself as one of the country's most dependable Test batters, particularly in overseas conditions.

He represented India in 85 Tests, scoring 5,077 runs at an average of 38.46, including 12 centuries. He also featured in 90 ODIs, amassing 2,962 runs with three hundreds, and played 20 T20Is, scoring 375 runs.

His final Test appearance came against the West Indies in July 2023, while his last ODI was in 2018.

Rahane's defining moment arrived during India's memorable 2020-21 Test tour of Australia.

Following India's humiliating collapse for 36 all out in Adelaide and Virat Kohli's departure on paternity leave, Rahane took over the captaincy and inspired one of the greatest comebacks in Test history.

His match-winning century in Melbourne levelled the series before India, despite an injury-hit squad, secured a remarkable 2-1 series victory in Australia under his leadership.

Rahane captained India in six Test matches, winning four and drawing two—finishing his captaincy career without suffering a single defeat.

Rahane also enjoyed a long Indian Premier League career, playing 212 matches for six franchises.

He lifted his only IPL title with Chennai Super Kings in 2023 before captaining Kolkata Knight Riders over the past two seasons.

His retirement now leaves Kolkata searching for a new leader ahead of the next IPL campaign.
