Alireza Arafi appointed to Iran’s Interim Leadership Council
Alireza Arafi, a member of Iran’s Guardian Council, has been appointed to the interim Leadership Council as a clerical judge.
The Council will assume the duties of the Supreme Leader until a new leader is elected in Iran, reports Al Jazeera.
The interim council will work alongside President Masoud Pezeshkian and Chief Justice Gholam-Hossein Mohseni-Eje’i.
The Assembly of Experts is responsible for overseeing the election of Iran’s next Supreme Leader.
The appointments follow the death of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei in a joint US-Israeli strike, sparking global attention on Iran’s succession.
In an interview with CBS News, US President Donald Trump said he is aware of who is making decisions in Tehran but would not disclose details, adding that while he sees potential candidates, the council may eventually seek his opinion on a preferred successor.
