The transfer saga surrounding Argentine striker Julian Alvarez has continued even during the 2026 World Cup. After Argentina's win over Austria, Alvarez openly stated that he wants to leave Atletico and has already informed the club of his decision.

In response, Atletico Madrid CEO Miguel Ángel Gil Marín has reacted firmly, stating that the club has no intention of selling Alvarez to Barcelona or any other club this season. He also threatened to file a complaint with FIFA against Barcelona, accusing them of "disrespectful" behaviour and lying to players, the media and their own fans.

Atletico remain financially resolute. Barcelona made a formal offer of €10 million, identifying Alvarez as their primary target for the summer 2026 transfer window. Atletico did not respond directly but pointed to the player's €50 million release clause. Recent reports suggest Atletico have set Alvarez's value at €20 million to deter other clubs, despite his contract running until 2030.

Barcelona President Joan Laporta remains optimistic, saying he has spoken directly with Atletico and made the club's position clear. However, with Atletico remaining completely inflexible, he hopes they will reconsider.
