A moderate 5.5-magnitude earthquake struck eastern Afghanistan on Tuesday (September 2), just two days after a devastating 6.0-magnitude quake wreaked widespread destruction. The new tremor has further panicked residents and raised fears of more casualties and damage.

So far, media reports have confirmed that more than 1,400 people were killed in the earthquake on Sunday. However, many remain trapped under the rubble, and the death toll is expected to rise.

According to Reuters, Tuesday’s earthquake had its epicenter 10 kilometers underground. Following the new tremor, rescue operations were temporarily suspended. Landslides triggered by the quake have further restricted access to affected areas.

A Reuters journalist on the ground reported that several houses which were damaged but left standing after the first wave, and collapsed during the second one. As of now, 1,411 deaths have been confirmed, with 3,124 people injured. In addition, at least 5,400 houses have been damaged.
