Apple’s new AirPods 5: improved noise cancellation, Siri AI and live translation

Apple has unveiled its new generation open-ear earbuds AirPods 5, featuring more powerful active noise cancellation, improved sound quality, new Siri AI features and live translation.

Apple said the new multiport acoustic architecture and updated computational audio technology enable AirPods 5 to block 50 percent more external sound with active noise cancellation switched on compared to the previous AirPods 4. The earbuds also come with improved transparency mode, adaptive audio and conversation awareness features.

Alongside the new acoustic design and next-generation adaptive EQ, Apple has expanded hands-free AI features for users of compatible iPhones. Siri AI can now draw information from messages, emails and photos to answer users’ questions or complete various tasks. Users will even be able to reply to Siri by nodding or shaking their head.

When connected to a compatible Apple Intelligence device, the live translation feature on AirPods 5 will allow users to hear conversations translated into their preferred language.

Apple is releasing the new AirPods in two versions. The standard AirPods 5 is priced at $129, while the $149 version with wireless charging case includes stem volume control and longer battery life.

According to Apple, the wireless charging version can be used continuously for five hours with active noise cancellation on and up to 22 hours with the charging case. The case supports USB-C, Qi wireless charging and Apple Watch charger.
