Argentina defeated Brazil 2-1 after extra time to retain the South American U-17 Futsal Championship, completing a third consecutive title triumph against their regional rivals.

The Albiceleste secured the dramatic victory on Sunday at the Suma Stadium in Asuncion, Paraguay, where all matches in the tournament were played.

Tomas Barrios and captain Lorenzo Sampedro scored Argentina’s goals, while goalkeeper Santino Sanchez played a key role in the victory with several crucial saves, particularly late in the first half.

Brazil were also reduced to 10 players after one of their players was sent off.

The title marked another milestone for coach Santiago Basile, who won the World Championship as a player in 2016. Since taking charge of the U-17 side, Basile has led Argentina to three South American titles in three appearances.

The victory was especially significant after Brazil had beaten Argentina 2-0 in the group stage. Brazil had also defeated them in the final of the Juvenile Pan American Games in Panama earlier this year.

Argentina’s win therefore settled the score against Brazil on the biggest stage, while strengthening their dominance in South American youth futsal.

Senior Argentina futsal coach Matias Lucuix was among those watching the final from the stands, with the success offering further encouragement for the country’s next generation of futsal talent.
