Argentina edge Mauritania 2-1 in friendly, Messi fails to score
Argentina national football team secured a 2-1 win over Mauritania national football team in an international friendly, with Lionel Messi unable to find the net despite featuring in the second half.
The match, played at La Bombonera in Buenos Aires, saw a clear ranking gap between the sides—Argentina ranked third in the world, while Mauritania stood at 115th.
Argentina dominated early proceedings and took the lead in the 17th minute through Enzo Fernández, who finished from a pass by Nahuel Molina. The hosts doubled their advantage in the 32nd minute when Nico Paz curled in a superb free-kick.
Messi was introduced after the break but struggled to make an impact. Argentina failed to register a shot on target in the second half, with Messi’s only effort being denied.
Mauritania grew into the game and tested goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez on multiple occasions. Their persistence paid off deep into stoppage time, as Jordan Lefort pulled one back in the 93rd minute to add late drama.
However, Argentina held on to secure the win.
The friendly was arranged after the planned Finalissima clash against Spain was cancelled due to tensions in the Middle East. Argentina will next face Zambia at the same venue on March 31 in their final home match before the World Cup.
