Argentina's defeat in the final saw their dream of winning a second consecutive World Cup shattered. Some players' on-field and off-field behaviour throughout the tournament also sparked debate. Losing the top ranking has come as another blow for Argentina.
In the latest FIFA rankings, Spain have 1,995.88 points. This is the first time they have reached the top of the rankings since winning their second World Cup title . Argentina, meanwhile, have dropped to second with 1,970.30 points .
France remain in third place with 1,948.97 points, while England are fourth with 1,922.83 points. Brazil occupy fifth place (1,804.92), followed by Morocco in sixth (1,803.99) .
FIFA regularly updated the rankings throughout the World Cup based on the results of each match, leading to multiple changes in positions. Argentina were top at the start of the tournament. They lost the position mid-way through but regained it after beating England in the semi-finals. However, after losing to Spain in the final, the current runners-up could not hold on to the top spot.
According to the FIFA schedule, these rankings will remain unchanged until October 7 .
