Argentina or Switzerland? Supercomputer delivers its Quarter-final prediction

The stage is set for a blockbuster FIFA World Cup quarter-final as defending champions Argentina prepare to face giant-killers Switzerland. While the knockout stage has already produced its share of shocks, Opta's supercomputer believes Lionel Scaloni's men remain firmly on course for the semi-finals.

Ahead of the showdown, Opta ran 25,000 match simulations, analysing thousands of data points, including team strength, player performance and recent form. The verdict gives Argentina a commanding 57.1 percent chance of winning inside 90 minutes.

Switzerland, fresh from eliminating Colombia on penalties, have been handed just an 18.7 percent chance of securing victory in regulation time. The remaining 24.2 percent probability suggests the contest could go beyond 90 minutes, setting the stage for extra time or another nerve-shredding penalty shootout.

Despite the numbers favouring Argentina, this World Cup has repeatedly defied predictions. The defending champions have flirted with elimination more than once before producing dramatic comebacks, including their thrilling last-16 turnaround against Egypt.

Opta's projections also place Argentina in a strong position to reach the last four, giving the Albiceleste a 69.4 percent probability of advancing, compared with 30.6% for Switzerland.

Statistics may favour Argentina, but knockout football rarely follows the script. With a place in the semi-finals—and a potential clash against England or Norway—on the line, Switzerland will be aiming to prove once again that World Cup predictions count for little once the whistle blows.
